The city of Arnhem will honor the stars from its illustrious history with special memorials. The Walk of Fame around Arnhem, which was introduced in October 17, 2011, started with a historical figure who is virtually unknown amongst the Dutch public, namely Sir Philip Sidney: soldier, poet, and diplomat.
A memorial in the shape of a stone strip has been installed in front of Bakkerstraat 68. Its inscription reads:
ON OCTOBER 17, 1586, ENGLISH POET, DIPLOMAT, AND SOLDIER * SIR PHILIP SIDNEY *, DIED IN THIS HOUSE FROM WOUNDS SUFFERED AT THE BATTLE OF ZUTPHEN. HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR OUR FREEDOM.
The stone strip was revealed on October 17, 2011 by Mr. Krikke, the mayor of Arnhem, and Philip John Aldernon Sidney, 2nd Viscount de L'Isle, the current inhabitant of Penshurst Place and a distant relative of Sir Philip Sidney. Philip Sidney's team was also present at the event, to which it provided a financial contribution.
